Shell GTL fluids are the miracle solvents, high purity parafinnic fluids that based on gas to liquid technology. Their unique synthetic composition, with low aromatics content, is designed to enhance performance over conventional solvents in many different applications.

GAS TO LIQUIDS TECHNOLOGY: AT THE FOREFRONT OF INNOVATION

Shell GTL Fluids and solvents are produced by Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) process, which uses natural gas as a feedstock.

The basic chemistry behind the GTL process, known as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, was develop in the 1920s by two German scientists, Franz Fisher and Hans Tropsch.  Taking this technology as their starting point, Shell technologist have worked for more than 35 years to refine the GTL process.

  • Reduced environmental impact: low aromatic and naphthenic content designed to promote better biodegradability, lower ecotoxicity and lower photochemical reactivity.  The latter is designed to result in very low ozone formation potential.
  • High purity: synthesized from methane gas, GTL Fluids and Solvents comprise only iso and normal paraffins. They contain low amount of impurities such as sulphur, olefins and polycyclic aromatics.  They have a bright and clear appearance.
  • Low odour: almost odourless, due to their low aromatic and naphthenic content.
  • Synthetic: GTL technology and gas feedstock are designed to provide a more stable, synthetic product with consistent composition.

IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol / Iso Propanol)

Alcohols and glycols are versatile solvents with a pleasant odour. The length and the structure of the alkyl chain is decisive for the solvency of these products. Lower alcohols (up to C4) are water soluble and dissolve polar components.
The Shell Chemicals range of alcohols includes C3 to C9 alcohols such as isopropyl alcohol (IPA), diacetone alcohol and methyl isobutyl carbinol. For IPA, different grades are available to comply with specific needs for certain applications.
This includes an IPA-GMP grade that is available in Europe for use as an excipient in in the production of pharmaceuticals, foods, and personal care cosmetics products; and an IPA-USP grade that is available in North America for use as an active ingredient and/or excipient in the production of pharmaceuticals, foods, and personal care cosmetics products.
Shell chemicals companies also produce ethylene and propylene oxide glycol ethers, which are often used as components in water-based coating

Applications

The applications where alcohols and glycols are used include surface coatings, thinners, printing inks, adhesives, cosmetics, toiletries and cleaners. These products are also used in pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, medical applications, for the extraction of vitamins, as wetting agents in lithographic printing and as chemical intermediates.

M-Xylene (Mix Xylene)

Xylenes are extracted or distilled from reformate, a stream derived from the refining of high-octane motor gasoline. They can also be produced from toluene using the disproportionation process. They are colourless, sweet-smelling liquids that are very flammable.
Xylenes occur as three isomers, each having two methyl groups attached to a basic benzene hydrocarbon ring. The type of isomer is distinguished by the position of the methyl groups on the ring. Para-xylene has the methyl groups attached on opposite sides of the ring, ortho-xylene has the two methyl groups next to each other, while meta-xylene has them positioned with one carbon in between the two groups. Shell chemicals companies primarily supply xylenes as a mixed stream, although various processes can be used to separate and/or convert the isomers.

Applications

Some mixed xylenes are used as solvents and in the printing, rubber, and leather industries. However, most mixed xylenes are separated and the individual isomers consumed in specific end-uses. Para-xylene is primarily used as a feedstock for terephthalic acid, a key component in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resins. Ortho-xylene is used in plasticisers, medicines, and dyes.  Mixed xylenes are also a desirable gasoline component, but are blended less often than toluene because there is greater demand and higher value in their chemical applications.

N-Hexane (Normal Hexane)

Hexane is an organic solvent made of cruide oil that has numerous uses.  it is a neurotoxicant and exposure can cause numbness in the feet and hands and later weakness or numbness throughout the arms and legs.  These anesthetic qualities have led some to abuse products that contain hexane, including smelling gasoline and rubber cement.

Pure hexane is used mainly in laboratories while hexane mixed with other similiar solvents chemical is used extensively.  These solvents are used to extract vegetable oils from crops such as soybeans and is also used as a cleaning agent in the printing, textile, furniture, and shoemaking industries.  It is also in the roofing and shoe industries in glues and can be found in numerous cunsumer products including gasoline, quick-drying glues, and rubber cement.

Low Aromatic White Spirit (LAWS)

White spirits and mineral spirits blends are mixtures of paraffins, cycloparaffins and aromatic hydrocarbons with boiling ranges which typically lie between 150°C and 220°C. They are clear water-white liquids, chemically stable and non-corrosive and possess a mild odour. 

Applications

White spirits and mineral spirits blends are used as solvents or diluents in thinners for paints and varnishes, paint driers, colour printing of fabrics, metal cleaning and degreasing, preparation of furniture, shoe and floor polishes, dry cleaning formulations and in the rubber industry.

Shellsol A-100 (Aromatic 100)

Shellsol A100 is a high flash point hydrocarbon solvent.  It perform well in situations requiring a high level of solvency.  Versatile range of high boiling highly aromatic solvents.  C9-C10 hydrocarbon solvent.  Used in the rubber, textile and chemical process industries, and in household products, surface coating, printing inks, cleaners and pesticides and wood preservation formulations.

Shellsol 2046

A special kerosene-cut with a mixture of paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatic that gives the solvent its increased solvency power.  The higher boiling range results in a high flash point, low avaporation rate, and low vapor pressure.  It is widely used in solvent extraction applications primarily in the mining industry, and also used in a range of cleaning and compounding applications.  This product is insoluble in water and therefore not miscible.
